Silicon Laboratories Inc. (NASDAQ: SLAB) shares exploded Wednesday. The stock surged 49.10% to $203.70 by mid-morning. This massive rally followed the news that Texas Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: TXN) will acquire the wireless chip designer in an all-cash transaction.
The deal carries a $7.5 billion price tag. Texas Instruments is offering $165 per share, but the market price blew past that level as trading intensified. Investors are betting on the combined power of two semiconductor giants dominating the industrial connectivity sector.
Texas Instruments moved in the opposite direction. Shares of the Dallas-based manufacturer dipped 1.20% to $222.50 as the opening bell faded. While TXN absorbs the acquisition costs, CEO Haviv Ilan is focused on long-term scaling in the Internet of Things market.
“This acquisition accelerates our strategy to provide broader connectivity solutions to our customers,” Ilan said in the official announcement. “Silicon Labs’ expertise in low-power wireless is a perfect complement to our existing portfolio.”
The merger targets the “Matter” protocol and Bluetooth dominance. By integrating Silicon Labs, Texas Instruments gains a massive patent library. This move strengthens their grip on the hardware that powers smart factories and connected cities globally.
Regulators are next. Both boards have greenlit the merger, but federal oversight remains the final hurdle. Executives anticipate a formal close during the third quarter of 2026 as Silicon Labs continues to trade at record-high premiums.
